Friendships in the military are a little different than most people know. Yes, they are a little odder. But, the way things work is a little different as well. Most of my friends back home have seen their group of friends weekly, if not more often, for decades. It doesn’t really work that way when you’re moving to different parts of the world every few years. We make friends and then don’t see each other for years. Facebook, email, and cheap phone calls make it a little more seamless, but you still may not see each other face to face for years. This was our case this past week.
Some good friends of ours were flying into Fort Bragg for a meeting (the Shorters) and Lisa was coordinating with Leslie on when and where to meet. We made dinner plans for when they arrived in Fayetteville at Smokey Bones. As soon as Lisa had set up plans with Leslie and Shane for dinner a friend from Fort Lewis, Washington that I haven’t seen in about 5 years texts and tells me he’s two hours away from Bragg. Twoslow is travelling the States in his VW Westy and is currently making his way down to Georgia for a friend’s airborne school graduation. Trey cruised into town and we got to hang out for a few hours while he gave Lisa and I the grand tour of his new ride before we were off to have dinner with Leslie and Shane. He stayed the night at our place to take a break from the road and I was able to hang out a little more when we got back from dinner and see him off the next day before I went to work.
We met Leslie and Shane at Smokey Bones and caught up on everything that has been going on over the last few years. It was good to see them and catch up on their time in Okinawa and now back to Fort Lewis where we first met them. We were only able to spend a couple hours together, since they had work events to attend the next day. It was a short meeting of swapping stories and went by way too fast.
It’s kind of funny how things work out. Lisa and I were just saying how we were missing our old friends and reminiscing about all the great people we’ve met from around the world. Then we get two reunions in the same night. Unfortunately the rendezvous' were so quick we were unable to take anyone for a sail, maybe next time.
Friends, friends, everywhere!!!
