Review of Eva-dry EDV-2200 Dehumidifier
09/06/2015

When we purchased Starjewel the previous owner had a dehumidifier running while the boat was at dock. We hadn’t noticed this on any other boats, but could tell right away the difference it made. Unlike most boats we looked at, there was no musty smell. They had an EDV-1100 running and I did some searching online and found an EDV-2200 model that works for areas up to 2200 cubic feet. The EDV- 1100 works for 1100 cubic feet of space. At 32’ long 10’ beam and about 6’ headroom I figure the H326 has about 1920 cubic feet. This is a rough estimate since the boat is shaped like, well a boat. But I thought for the couple extra dollars I should go ahead and get the larger system. We do have A/C on the boat but we don’t run it when we are not on board due the increased electrical draw. The EDV-2200 however doesn’t draw that much power and it’s easy to leave plugged in while we’re at work through the week. Recently upon our return I checked the humidity in the salon and it was around 38% on a day when outside it was 67%. It certainly seems to be working well for our boat. Not only does it help to eliminate the damp smell it will help with maintenance of the boat. The woods won’t swell as easily, the cushions will not become as damp and it will help to dry out the boat. While this isn’t something you would necessarily take cruising with you, if your boat is tied up to the dock for long periods of inactivity it is a great addition.
The dehumidifier comes with a collection container and the system will shut off until it is drained. This would normally require you to be there to empty it out or it would eventually shut down. I chose to install a drain tube and run it to the galley sink. This way it will never become so full as to shut down. I purchased a refrigerator ice maker connector kit from Walmart for $6.79 and drilled a hole into the collection container and screwed the brass fitting in. I then super glued the fitting and tube to ensure no leaks.
The EDV-2200 is capable of gathering 20.5 oz of water per day at 86 degrees F and 80% relative humidity. It operates with a 12VDC 6 AMP 72W power cord or 110V AC power cord. It measures 8 ½”W x 14’H x 6 ¾”D. It is a little big sitting on the galley counter, but we keep it stowed under the sink when we’re on the boat. When we’re putting the boat away for the week we pull it out, run the drain plug to the sink, and plug it in. It keeps everything fresh while we’re away.
PROs- Great at reducing humidity on the boat
Modified to drain into sink
Sized for easy stowage
110V or 12VDC capable
CONS- Requires modification for drain tube
