I grew up in Northern Kentucky along the Ohio river, so it's almost as Southern as Mississippi. Other than the small ski boats on the river, I've never really been around boats. I graduated high school and worked a myriad of jobs from fast food worker to cargo aircraft loader. I started dating Lisa soon after graduation. I joined the military at 21, married Lisa and moved to Germany. We had a blast traveling to Italy, France, England and about 10 other countries during our stay. We've always traveled wherever we've been stationed. I guess that's why I want to sail when I retire. Still able to see exotic places and take my home with me. What could go wrong with that? With the military retirement we have the chance to be able to live this dream a little earlier than the average retired couple. My retirement isn't as nice as a Congressman, but I can get shot, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
It's true I don't have an outstanding nautical pedigree, but hopefully I'll be able to reconcile my lack of decades of experience with years of experience and some sailing instruction. Since we decided to try the cruising lifestyle out after retirement we've been reading and taking classes whenever we get the chance. I can't wait to get on the water, see new places and enjoy it all with Lisa.
I have completed ASA 101, ASA 103, ASA 104, ASA 105, ASA 106, and ASA 114. I am also a 50GRT USCG Captain with a Sailing and Towing Endorsement. I have Basic Marine Firefighting, Maritime Security Awareness, STCW Basic First Aid, STCW PSSR, and STCW PST. I have graduated the Chapman School of Seamanship Professional Mariner Training and Yacht & Small Craft Surveying courses. I am an American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) member and have the ABYC Standards Certificate.
