Review of Standard Horizon GX2200B
07/14/2014
When we purchased Starjewel the VHF would transmit but not receive. It was a RAY 53 DSC VHF radio and appeared to be the original VHF that came with the boat in 2002. Since it was a few years old and in need of repair I wanted to replace it with a newer model that included some features like Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Digital Selective Calling (DSC). The chartplotter that came with the boat was a Standard Horizon CP-180i, so I went with Standard Horizon to ensure ease of communication with the chartplotter.
The GX2200 has built in GPS, and AIS A&B, along with other features like DSC and functionality for a loudspeaker option. The radios menu system is easy and intuitive to use. The installation was also fairly straightforward when you follow the detailed manual. This was my first sailboat VHF install and I had no issues getting everything wired and communicating with the chartplotter. Running the wiring through the boat was far more difficult than correctly connecting the wiring in accordance with the wiring diagram. The VHF was installed near the NAV station so I also used the 23' extension cable to set up a port on the binnacle for a STD-CMP30B RAM2 remote hand mic (not included). This set up allows me to hear and respond to any call whether I'm up at the helm or down in the salon. The internal GPS has no issues receiving a signal where it is installed inside at the NAV station.
It is also rated to be submersible up to 3 feet for 30 minutes. Given that it is mounted inside my boat, I am loathe to test this so I can't vouch for this statement. Overall this has been a great upgrade to Starjewel and I would purchase this item again.
