While I'm not walking around in my black on black suit and sunglasses zapping people with my Neuralyzer I try to make some time to see the sights around town.
What to see.
If your travels do take you through Roswell you have to check out the International UFO Museum and Research Center. The museum covers the famous events regarding the happenings around Roswell. They have replicas of many of the documents from witness statements to official investigations conducted by the US Government. You can read exactly how William Brazel came across the debris field that is now believed to be from Project Mogul which monitored nuclear tests. There is a theater inside that shows movies relating to UFOs and Roswell. A research library and gift shop are situated inside so you can pick up a couple souvenirs on your way out for your time in New Mexico.
Bitter Lake national Wildlife Refuge is located just to the Northeast of Roswell. This is a wetland oasis in the desert that is home to a wide diversity of wildlife from shrew to over 100 species of dragonflies. If you get tired of looking at the city or dry desert you can see lots of green and large wetlands areas. They have several walking trails to stretch your legs and more than a couple lookouts to take in the entire view.
While you can't really swim in Bitter Lake you can travel to Bottomless Lakes State Park to cool off and get in some hiking. It's a beautiful area that contains nine lakes that are surrounded by cliffs making for a popular dive spot. The maximum depth of Lea Lake where swimming is allowed is 90 feet.
Where to eat.
Roswell has all the standard fare you'd find in any city. There are some less well known locations like the Cattle Baron Restaurants. It's a pleasant sit down steakhouse that was founded in New Mexico. The menu covers everything from steak to seafood. They have a large fruit and salad bar if you're not feeling up for a side of meat during your stay.
If you're looking for something a little more on the go, Big D's Downtown Dive is the local favorite burger joint. You can't leave hungry from this place. The burgers are huge and the fries are almost a meal unto themselves. They not only have burgers and fries but also serve stuffed avocado, wings, and specialty fries like their Thanksgiving fries made from sweet potatoes. The price is a little steep for a burger and fries, but you get what you pay for at Big D's.
While I haven't been abducted by aliens yet, that I remember, I will be going back to Roswell a few more times giving me ample opportunity to become one of the chosen ones.
