Starjewel with Christmas lights. Last Saturday Lisa and I drove down to Oriental and got our boat ready to participate in the town's Spirit of Christmas festival. We dressed up Starjewel with a tree of lights and even a ball atop the mast. Lisa was remarking how it looked like the time square ball.
It was a great day. We met the other boats out at Oriental channel marker #1 and patiently waited for sundown. Once it was dark enough to see the boat lights from shore we proceeded down the channel, past Oriental harbor then around to Whittaker point and passing Lou Mac Park where several vehicles were watching the procession. After rounding #2 in Whittaker creek we took the channel back and headed to Oriental harbor to tie up the boat and get out to see the town. There were several boats all done up in Christmas lighting and the town had decorations throughout. Since it wasn't actually Christmas yet we didn't go for a traditional Christmas dinner. Instead Lisa cooked up some bacon wrapped shrimp and we threw some potatoes and peppers on the grill. It was delicious and it had the added benefit of making the cabin nice and toasty. It is December in North Carolina, so it gets a little chilly.
After the parade was finished and our tummies were full we untied and started our way back across the channel to Pecan Grove Marina. We had been out at night a couple times before, but not many. It was fun working our way back around the anchored boats, docks, piers and back through the unlit channel markers to Pecan Grove. Once we were back safely into our slip we tied off and got ready for sleep. We had gotten up early so we could make the three hour drive, clean Starjewel, string lights and still make it out to the start point in time for our first Christmas Flotilla. We're going to keep some lights for Christmas every year.
