Once we were settled into our slip at Grand Bahama Yacht Club, we rinsed off the boat, hooked up to power and got the wonderful air conditioning working. Everyone got refreshed from the slog across the Gulf Stream and we started drying out the forward berth from the waves crashing over the deck.
We took some time to relax after the crossing and walked around the marina, and then we lowered the tender and took a quick trip to Port Lucaya. This area is a big tourist hub so there is plenty to do and plenty of places to eat. However, since it was New Year’s Eve we wanted to get out and do something to celebrate. Freeport was celebrating their Junkanoo festival so all of us went to downtown Freeport to check out the celebration and have a drink or two. The party and parade was just as exciting as you would expect a NYE party to be. The floats were amazing and all were handmade. It is quite a sight to see the monstrous floats rolling down the road when you realize they are all handmade.
The next day we took a few trips out in the tender with our snorkel gear around Freeeport. We stopped by Coral Beach, East Palm Beach, and found a reef near Taino Beach. While we did see some sea life we didn’t see nearly as many fish or other sea creatures as we had hoped. After a full day of snorkeling and speeding through the waves off of a Bahamas island we made our way back to Unwritten Timeline, cleaned up and headed out for a relaxing dinner. We tried Pisces Seafood house and Pizzeria. The food was good and the outdoor seating was great. We were on our worldwide trip and sitting on an island enjoying good food, good drink, and good friends. Life is not too bad.
The next day Greg and Dana decided to take us out on a little trip. They had booked us on an excursion to do some kayaking through the mangroves, exploring some island caves, and relaxing on Gold Rock Beach. It really was an amazing trip. We started out exploring Burial Mound Cave and Ben’s cave. These caves can be seen on foot just a little bit inside or you can dive the caves, as they are filled with water. After checking out the caves, we made our way across the road where we were given some kayaks so we could paddle down the serene mangrove forest. Just on the other side of the mangroves was Gold Rock Beach. We made our way East to an inlet where we beached the kayaks before heading to Gold Rock Beach for a catered lunch and some relaxing by the ocean. This sailing around the world sure is tough work sometimes.
The next day Dana and Greg headed out on a Jeep tour of Grand Bahama while Lisa and I decided to sit back and relax aboard Unwritten Timeline. It was probably a good thing since this was the first new country for Sophia and Bastet as well. It was good to relax aboard and hang out with them for a bit.
The next couple days we had fun exploring the area around Port Lucaya and Freeport with our friends. It was great hanging out, having fun, and fixing all the world’s problems over drinks. Too often when you move a lot you don’t have time to always sit back and relax with good friends. But, too soon it was time for Dana and Greg to head back to land life. They caught a cab to the airport so they could fly back home. It was awesome to be able to do that to celebrate the start of our Journey and our first country with them. Thanks for coming along. We can’t wait to have you guys out again.
