We made it down to the boat this weekend and finally got to sail our new boat in great weather. The first time we were together on the boat it was raining and we were moving it from one marina to another, getting situated and getting acquainted with the boat. This weekend we drove down threw all our stuff on the boat and took off as fast as we could get the boat untied. We exited the channel and followed the river East for around three hours. At first there was no wind, but it picked up to the predicted 10-15 kts for the rest of the afternoon. Lisa took some time to work on her tan up on the foredeck and we took turns hanging our feet off the transom while the autopilot kept us steering with the wind. We had a great trip on a beam reach tacked and turned towards the marina to make it in for dinner at The Silos restaurant in Oriental. This time docking was much better also. Lisa knew exactly where the cleats were and we slid right in. Our first sail on our first boat was as perfect as it should be.
Dinner at The Silos was pretty good. Lisa had a spinach salad with chicken that was flavored perfectly. I ordered a meatball sub and coleslaw. The coleslaw was great but the meatballs were a little bland. The hoagie bun and melted mozzarella made up for it though. I had also ordered some mozzarella sticks. There was a mix up with orders and I never was able to try them. The staff quickly brought out a cannolo for the mistake. I was glad they forgot the sticks because the cannolo was fantastic and finished off the day perfectly.
After dinner it was back to work. Lisa and I finished a couple more projects off the list. I was able to troubleshoot the charging problem. Apparently the previous owner had failed to actually connect the wire that tells the alternator to charge. After a couple hours of checking the wire all the way back to the ignition switch I found the wire hanging, not attached to anything. I hooked it up, fired up the engine and what do you know, charging. Next mission, is running wires for the autopilot and installing the VHF radio so they can all talk to each other.
While I was busy hunched over the engine and holed up into tiny compartments Lisa was busy unpacking things from the house so we don’t have to transport everything back and forth every weekend. She installed a towel holder in the bathroom so we don’t have to hold the towel in our hand when we are taking a shower or washing our hands and face in the head. She was also organizing the boat’s galley.
Every weekend we check off more projects and get more acquainted with the boat. Next week is a 4 day weekend for Memorial Day. We’ll be bringing Sophia back down and staying a night or two. Hopefully we’ll knock out several more things off the list.
A short video of the day.
