This weekend was all spent working on the engine. It seems one of the largest and easily avoided problems you come across when buying used is deferred maintenance. I discovered this first hand with Starjewel. The previous owner let some things go. I purchased the 2GM20FE Minor Service kit from Niemiec Marine to service the engine on Starjewel that contains:
Lube Oil Filter
Fuel Filter Kit
Air Filter Element
Belts
Water Pump Impeller and Gasket
Coolant Treatment
Fuel Treatment
Dry Box
I changed the oil and oil filter a couple weeks ago while I was waiting for the engine service kit in the mail. The oil was a bit worn when I changed it, but not terrible. I kept the included oil filter for the next service. Some items were in good repair. The impeller and engine belts looked pretty good, but that was about the end of the easy stuff. Even something as simple as the air cleaner was quite dirty. The real headache came with the fuel system. We had noticed some hard starting and the engine would run a little rough at times. Now I know why. The secondary fuel filter was zip tied to a hose in the engine compartment. This isn't too bad except the water separator doesn't really separate the water when it doesn't stay vertical. When I removed the drain from the secondary fuel filter, nothing came out. I looked inside and noticed this red film covering the hole. Apparently fuel and something else had gummed up the filter so bad nothing would even drain from the bottom. I decided to just replace the entire housing and filter. So another trip to West Marine ensued. Once the filter was replaced and the new housing mounted where it's supposed to be fuel was flowing to the primary filter. The primary filter didn't have any of the goop inside but the filter itself didn't exactly look like it was in good condition either. There was what looked to be a rust build up on the metal parts of the filter. I replaced the filter and cleaned up the housing before re-assembly. I bled the fuel system and now it starts right up and purrs like a kitten. It's so nice when things just run right.
