We went for a sail this week and ended up at the dreaded Alligator Island. Well maybe it wasn’t so dreaded and not even named Alligator Island. That’s just what Lisa kept referring to it as. It was actually a little strip of white sand beach just west of Pinely Island Bombing range in Merrimon, NC. The beach was only about 20 meters wide and then it turned to swampland with no roads to the beach. This is why Lisa was sure there would be Alligators just waiting to jump out and eat us. Luckily for us Sophia came along and was obviously a great deterrent for all the alligators, as we saw none. It was a great secluded beach along the Neuse River. With no roads the only way to get there is to anchor out and dingy over. Lisa and I purchased a couple inflatable kayaks and loaded up Sophia in mine and paddled to the beach from about 100 feet off shore. We spent about an hour and a half exploring the beach with Sophia running all over in and out of the water. We’ll have to head back out there again and stay the night at anchor. It would be a great place for a beach party and bonfire.
On the sail home we had 15kts of wind almost directly from behind and it was a quick sail back home. Unfortunately when we were heading into the channel and furling the mainsail the inhaul got jammed and the line snapped. I had to grab a wench and head to the mast to manually roll in the mainsail while Lisa kept us motoring into the wind. Once we got all the sails secure we made our way back into Pecan Grove Marina put the boat away and had dinner and a couple beers for our hard day’s work. It was a great Memorial Day weekend.
While you’re enjoying your weekend remember why we celebrate this holiday. Godspeed my brothers.
