If you’ve been following our blog, you know Lisa and I are taking the long view of sailing around the world. This year, about 2-3 years before we even plan on purchasing our boat, we had the first of many garage sales. We used Facebook and Bookoo to post the garage sales and individual items for sale. We set up for 2 weekends in a row and netted a cool grand. Sure it’s not even a month’s payment on the boat we’re eyeballing, but it’s a start. We were always big Halloween aficionados and that is where the bulk of our loot came from. We would hold yearly parties and set up small haunted houses in the garage for the neighborhood kids. We went from five 37” 50 Gallon Husky tool boxes to zero containers for Halloween decorations. We held onto a few Halloween decorations for the boat. You’ll have to head over when you see us at anchor to celebrate October 31st with us. Halloween on the hook in the Caribbean doesn't sound so bad. We won’t have our life sized Grim Reaper on board, but we can still have Jell-O shots and sun downers until we think we see him. It was sad to see it all go, but it was worth it. We have started on our way to divesting what won’t fit on the boat, and made a little bit of cash along the way.
It is kind of nice and puzzling at the same time to go through all your possessions that you collect over a lifetime of land locked living. It always seems as though you find something new every time you look in the same closet. Some items bring back fond memories and sometimes you’re left asking yourself why you ever purchased that never used winter coat or Thighmaster in the first place.
Lisa and I are expecting one more move while I’m still in the military. When the time gets closer to retire, we’ll have an estate sale where we’ll get rid of almost everything else to include furniture, cars, motorcycles, homes and anything not sailing related. We will be keeping some sentimental items along with some furniture for when, and if we tire of sailing. We expect to keep our bedroom set, grandfather clock and I’m sure we’ll have boxes of photo albums, china and knick knacks that have been in the family for generations. We’ll pack up what we plan on keeping and put it in storage while we’re off seeing the world. Now we have 5 empty Husky tool boxes for storage. It’s a win, win.
